Kristin Kreuk is a Canadian actress who was born on December 30, 1982, but she didn't become an actress right away, did she? She led a pretty normal life as a kid, but that took a different turn in her 11th grade. I'll get more into that later.
She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, to Deanna Che and Peter Kreuk. Her parents worked as landscape architects, so you could say that she came from a pretty normal family. We're not talking about some crazy celebrity family, which is a good thing. That helped her live a normal life as a kid, which included karate lessons and gymnastics at the national level, but that had to stop due to scoliosis.
Even though Kristin Kreuk was born in Canada, her roots are pretty interesting. Her father is of Dutch descent, but her mother's side of the family is a bit more interesting. Her mother, Deanna, was of Chinese descent and was born in Indonesia, but that's not the end of it. Her grandmother, on her mother's side, was Chinese Jamaican. Both of them lived in Singapore and the Solomon Islands before finally moving to Vancouver, where Kristin was born.
She had other plans
I don't know if you knew this, but Kristin didn't really plan on becoming an actress. She was actually planning to study forensic science or psychology at Simon Fraser University. Before she had the chance to make up her mind, she was contacted by a casting director for the CBC television series Edgemont while she was still in high school.Kristin got the part in that same teenage soap opera, but that was just the beginning. After filming the first season, she got herself an agent and got a lead role in a TV movie, Snow White: The Fairest of Them All. This was back in 2001, so that year was pretty important for her, considering she landed 2 main roles.
Even though she landed that role for the movie, she kept filming the series Edgemont and got herself another main role besides those two. Her audition tape was sent to the producers of Smallville, and they were so impressed with her acting that they offered her a main role. She had that role for 7 seasons, and after that, she appeared as a guest in the 8th season.
Now, you must be thinking that's a lot, and it certainly seems like it. She had just gotten into the business, and she already landed multiple roles that were far from being small. Good for her, right?
She was done with these roles in 2009, and it was time to move on to other things. Well, that same year, she signed on a multiple-episode arc in the series Chuck. I don't know if you watched that, but she played the role of Hannah, a cute nerd chick who wanted to hook up with Chuck and even moved to another city just to be near him. Yeah, that girl. Anyway, that didn't last long, which sucks, by the way, but hey, it is what it is.
Kristin got a couple of roles in mini-series in that period, but that's nothing compared to the stuff she's already done. Also, she landed a main role in Beauty & the Beast. We've all heard about this, and if you want to see a version of this title that's not filled with characters, you'll have a chance to see Kristin in 70 episodes.
Hold on because one more main role is coming. In 2018, she played the main role in Burden of Truth, where she portrayed a big-city lawyer who takes on a case for a group of sick girls in her hometown. This show lasted for 4 seasons and ended in 2021.
It seems like she spent a lot of time making the series, which is true, but that's not all. She also had the chance to work on a handful of movies, so let's see which ones.
Have you heard the song "Scotty doesn't know?"
I can't believe that I don't remember this chick from one of the best comedy movies I watched. She played the role of Fiona in the movie EuroTrip. This was back in 2024, so yeah, she was a lot younger back then than she is now. She's the chick who cheated on Scotty with some singer who made a song about fucking his girl. Fucking epic, right? She signed on to make a Canadian movie, Partition, in 2005, but that movie aired two years later in 2007. She played the role of a vulnerable 17-year-old whose life was fucked up by the trauma of the Partition of India back in 1947. Yeah, that movie takes place way shortly after the Second World War.
In the meantime, she also made a short movie, Dream Princess, which was based on a comic book writer, Kaare Andrews. This is some sort of a modern remake of Sleeping Beauty with a twist. However, the funny thing is that it never aired. I guess it really sucked, and they realized it wasn't worth the hassle to even put it out there.
Shortly after, she got a part in the movie Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-li, where she played the title character. A year later, she starred in the Japanese horror movie Vampire. Now, here's the thing about Japanese movies. I might not have watched this particular one, but here's what I know. Japanese horror movies might really scare the shit out of you, so it might actually be a good one. All these American horror movies suck and might even be more funny than scary.
One year later, in 2011, she played the role of Heather in the movie Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy, which was based on Irvine Welsh's novel. Also, she played the role of Tilda in the science fiction comedy movie Space Milkshake one year later.
Now, if you compare the roles she got in movies to the ones she had in TV series, it's obvious that she had better luck with the series. Well, that's at least what I think because I have never even heard about most of these movies, but I can't say the same about the series.
Film production and voice acting
Kristin Keruk did more than just act. Kristin and Rosena Bhura, whom she met on the set of Partition, started a production company called Parvati Creative Inc., which focuses on human-centric films as seen through a female lens. I don't really know what that means, but they started a production company of their own!The first short movie they made was called Blink. The second project was a comedy web series called Queenie, which featured Kristin's friend Olivia Cheng.
Besides the movie production, she also provided the voice for Princess Shuyan in Shuyan Saga. This was a graphic novel series set in an ancient Chinese martial arts fantasy universe.
She won 3 awards
You could say that Kristin had a pretty successful career, and that explains why she won 3 awards. Now, she might have won only 3 awards, but she was nominated for 18 in total. I guess being nominated for something means something, but it means a lot more to win.The first award she won was the People's Choice Award back in 2014, but she won that same award the very next year. This was for Beauty and the Beast.
The other award she won was the Rockie Award, and it was for the combined effort of Burden of Truth, EuroTrip, and Smallville.
Successful Canadian actress who didn't even plan on being an actress
It's funny that Kristin Kreuk managed to land such roles from the beginning, even though she didn't really plan on becoming an actress. She was more interested in studying science or psychology, but that quickly changed after she was noticed by a casting director who gave her her first role in a teen soap opera. Not only did she get a role just like that, but it was a main role as well. She impressed a lot of people with her acting skills, which helped her land more lead roles in the next couple of years. She had the main role in the series Smallville and Beauty and the Beast, but there are other shows where she played an important role.
Now, her roles in the series seem pretty good, but I wouldn't really say she had done as much in movies. I think that everyone will recognize her from the movie EuroTrip, where she played the cheating GF Fiona, but besides that, I wouldn't really say some of her movies stand out. Also, she made her last movie in 2017, so I think that gives you all the information about her acting as far as the movies go.
